About Us

St. Sahag & St. Mesrob Armenian School

St. Sahag & St. Mesrob Armenian Saturday School was founded in 1956 under the auspices of the Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church of Toronto. It is the oldest Armenian language school in Toronto. Currently in its 70th academic year, the school is a vibrant educational institution. The Toronto District School Board supports the morning program.

We offer classes from kindergarten to high school in our TDSB Credit Courses. Western Armenian as well as Eastern Armenian are taught in separate classes from kindergarten to Grade 8. At the secondary level, both dialects are taught in the same classroom.

Our Mission

Our mission is to create an environment where students have the opportunity to connect with their Armenian heritage by exploring cultural dimensions such as Armenian history, art, literature, and music through the study of the Armenian language.

The vision of the school is to promote Armenian education in order to preserve the Armenian language and culture, and to prepare future leaders of the community who take pride in their Armenian heritage and make valuable contributions within the Armenian Community and to society at large.

Our Curriculum

The curriculum is developed by Armenian educators. We continually strive to improve our teaching materials and methods employing interactive, collaborative, and project-based styles of teaching. Classroom instructions focus on Armenian language oral communication, reading, comprehension, and writing. Students are taught the Armenian language, history, geography, music, religion, and culture.

The academic year extends from September to June. The School is open for a total of 30 Saturdays. The hours are from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM for K-8 and 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM for Secondary.

Language

Language is the foundation of one’s identity. The Armenian language program implements the communicative approach of teaching. The overall goal for our students is to develop speaking and literacy skills in the Armenian language and to inspire in them the love for the Armenian language. Teachers, students, and parents collaborate to create opportunities for meaningful communication and engagement with the Armenian language.

History and Culture

The goal is to instill the pride of the Armenian heritage in our students. Armenian history and culture solidify our students’ Armenian identity. Through interactive methods, such as drama and storytelling, teachers engage their students in learning not only the ancient history of Armenians, but also encourage students to learn about their own family histories.

Music

Learning Armenian songs and being part of the school choir is mandatory for all students. Music is part of our efforts to teach Armenian culture and the arts. This culminates in our year-end choir recital where all of our students come together to perform beautiful renditions of Armenian songs, ranging from classic folk songs to modern popular songs, in front of their families and community members.

70th Anniversary

This year, we're celebrating the 70th anniversary of our school's founding. As part of the celebration, we've decided to update our logo and website to refresh our appearance and reaffirm our committment to serving our community and students.

There's a lot more we have planned throughout the year to celebrate this milestone so keep an eye out for announcements on our website and posts on our social media to learn about how we plan to celebrate and how you can get involved.
